Most of the time the file will get fixed by the game client but other times it won't and that's when -image gets really handy.

Additionally there is a method to "unbloat" a GW.DAT file. The current size of a fully updated DAT is 2.9 gigs for the whole game. Sometimes. especially in older installs, the DAT gets filled with "garbage" due to, perhaps, errors or interruptions in the decompression process.

This process listed below is ideal for people who don't have the luxury of time or bandwidth but already have a fully or mostly updated game.

Also, you may want to defrag it...

The following method will "trim" down a bloated DAT:
(Make sure you have enough disk space)

1.) Run gw.exe -image to get all files. (If your installation of Guild wars is already up to date, skip this step)

2.) Then copy these folders and files (as indicated) from the GuildWars CD into a NEW folder ("GWINSTALL") on your hard drive:

Setup.exe
\Data
\Data\cdrom.ini
\Data\config.ini
\Data\Gw
\Data\Gw\GwSetup.exe

3.) After the files and folders are copied modify \Data\cdrom.ini to this:

[CDROM]
Program=Guild Wars
Chapter=
Disc=1

4.) Move your Gw.dat file to the "GWINSTALL" \Data\Gw folder

5.) Uninstall Guild Wars from Windows Control Panel

6.) Reinstall Guild Wars from the copied files on your hard drive by running setup.exe

I have no CD for 2/3 of the campaigns because I downloaded them from the internet........ (at a higher price than I would have paid in the store I later realized). So I am without the CD and without the cdrom.ini file.
